Intermittent fasting, definitely causing a buzz out there. Celebrities' following it and setting a trend for their followers.


What does it mean to following an intermittent fasting eating plan?

When you search for more information, many sites inform one too fast for certain periods and eat normal for the rest of the time, therefore no restrictions. The pattern can be a 16:8, 14:10, or a 5:2 fasting: eating sequence.

This basically means one fast for 14 hours and eat normal (feast?) over a 10-hour period or fast for 16 hours and eat normal (feast?) over an 8-hour period. The alternative is to eat normal for 5 days and fast/eat very few calories for 2 days of the week.


Now, what would normal eating mean to you? Eat as much as you can, high energy low nutritional value foods, exceeding the daily recommended allowances or a well-balanced diet consisting of high-density nutritional foods and lower calorie meals.

I hope it is the second choice. If one stick to unhealthy food choices not even the fasting periods will make a difference to long-term weight loss and health benefits.

It may be true that most individuals are looking for a quick fix and think diets (and dieticians) are boring. Well intermittent fasting is also a diet.

The good news is that you will lose weight on the intermitted fasting plan, but if the food choices made during the eating periods is not in check, the results will be slow with very little or no long-term results.


The best results are achieved through lifestyle changes and choices and diets such as the intermittent fasting eating plan may be used as a vehicle to reach and maintain those goals.
